(Achillea millefolium) WESTERN YARROW

The most trouble free of perennials. Yarrow grows in clusters and is very hardy and can grow with little water or care. It requires full sun to partial shade. This flower can grow in dry or moist well-drained soil. Yarrow grows in many soil types so it often works great in those trouble spots in the garden or somewhere you want something nice to grow but want to forget about it.  This flower has fern like foliage. It makes a great cut and/ or dried flower. Yarrow attracts birds, bees and butterflies.  This perennial has been used over the centuries as a herb for many things. Yarrow also grows by runners under the ground which can be good if you are using it as a ground cover or erosion control on a hillside. Plant this flower in the Fall or Spring in a full sun to partial sunny area outdoors.

Red Columbine is found from Southern Alaska to Baja, CA east to Montana and Utah. This flower attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Stems on this flower may spread to 3 ft. long and this flower can grow up to 3 ft. tall. Columbine is shade tolerant and will grow in medium to course textured soils. Medium moisture is required by this flower. Deer love to eat this plant in our experience with it so if you have deer in your area this might not be a good flower to have.* In the Northwest Fall plant for best results directly outside .. most Oregon natives need the cold weather to get them growing good.(*Be patient with natives...some can take longer to get out of the ground and grow and may take 2-3 yrs to establish)

The Calendula is a hardy annual and enjoys cooler temperatures which can lead to this flower coming back year after year from reseeding itself if it is planted in just the right growing zone. (This flower grows well in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and usually comes back every year).  It is often referred to as an old fashion marigold. This flower is a good cut flower. Calendulas are a herb and the petals from this flower can be added to salads for color. This flower can be started outdoors but they last longer and do better if planted outdoors. Some of the problems you can encounter with this flower is aphids and mildew.  You may fall plant this flower if you are in zones 7-10

This mix is a colorful blend of blue, pinks, purples and white knee high bachelor buttons. Bachelor Buttons enjoy full sun and well drained soil. They are a hardy annual and can be fall planted in zones 7-10. This flower can be started indoors but you may have better success starting directly outdoors. Bachelor Buttons are one of the easiest flowers to start from seed and make excellent cut flowers.

Siberian Wallflowers are native to Europe. They have a nice fragrant smell. These flowers act as a Biannual in cold climates and can act as a Perennial in warmer climates. In warmer climates plant this flower somewhat in the shade. This flower does not enjoy humid temperatures. Plant this flower in the spring or fall. Plant in the fall in warm climate areas. This flower can be started indoors in a greenhouse and be transplanted. Siberian Wallflowers enjoy cooler temperatures where it can be planted in full sun and tolerate drier soil once established.

Chicory is a perennial native to the Mediterranean. In Oregon this flower is often seed growing in the ditches or along side the road.  This flower can grow like a weed.  The first year you will only see plant growth; the second year it will bloom.  Plant Chicory in full sun.  This flower is also considered a herb.  The roots of Chicory are used to make 'Chicory Coffee' - a coffee substitute.  Chicory is very drought tolerant and has a deep taproot.

The Painted Daisy is a native to Morocco and will adapt to most climate conditions. It can tolerate low moisture and supplies colorful blooms. This flower is excellent for starting indoors and can be grown as a border or in pots. Painted Daisy does better in cooler temperatures such as along the Pacific Coast. This flower will grow in zones 1-11. There are no known bad problems known with diesease and pests with this flower. Plant Painted Daisies in full sun in just about any kind of soil as long as it is well drained.  This flower makes an excellent cut flower and comes in many different color combinations.

This flower is a native from California to British Columbia. Clarkia is named for Captain Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. This flower is good bee plant and best if mass planted and works excellent as a colorful border. Godetia have bright colors will stand out even when growing amidst grasses around them or will catch your eye when planted along the road.  This flower is related to the Evening Primrose. Plant Godetia in poor soil. Godetia has been known to grow in soils that are sandy, alkaline, or have salt. When planted in rich soil this flower will produce more foliage and less flowers. Seeds of this flower will germinate better in cool weather. This flower enjoys cooler climates that stay 80-90F or lower and does not tolerate hot, humid climates as much. Godetia does not transplant well so start outdoors into soil or into outside pots. This flower is excellent as a cut flower. Plant this flower's seeds in the fall if you live on the west side of the US and plant the seed in the Spring if you live in the Eastern US.

Mountain Garland is a native to the Western United States. This flower comes in a variety of fluorescent shades of pinks, purples, white and reddish pink. Mountain Garland is related to Godetia. You may need a support for this plant when it is full grown. In the Northwest US this plant can get 3-4 ft. tall. This flower grows well in zones 1-11. Rose bud looking flowers grow up the branches of its maroon colored spikes. Mountain Garland makes an excellent cut flower and will last longer if you pick when the flowers are just starting to bloom at the bottom of the stem and there are lots of buds left to open on the top. These flowers are very eye-catching and colorful because they are so bright. Plant this flower in full sun to partial shade. This flower dislikes hot humid weather.  If it is planted in soil that is too rich and also if this flower is given too much water it will get lots of foliage and not many blooms. This flower grows well in nitrogen low soil. Mountain Garland does not transplant well and therefore should be planted outdoors. You may plant this flower in the spring and if you are in zones 7-10 you may also plant this flower seed in the fall.

Chinese Houses are a native to California where they are often seen in shadier places growing wild. This flower enjoys cooler weather and likes partial shade and dry, well-drained soil. The reason this flower is named Chinese Houses is because it looks like a roof  of a Chinese Pagoda. This flower can be fall planted in zones 7-10 and makes an excellent border plant. Chinese Houses do not tolerate heat and like night temperatures that drop below 65F.

(Coreopsis lanceolata) LANCE LEAVED COREOPSIS

Lance Leaf Coreopsis is a hardy drought tolerant perennial. This flower will grow a lot with some blooms the first year and then bloom a lot the second year. This flower is also called Tickseed because the seeds resemble bugs. Any soils will work for this flower and it is a native to many US States. It makes an excellent cut flower. Lance Leaf Coreopsis can be started indoors or outdoors. Plant this flower in full sun to partial shade. This flower may need staking up once it is full grown. Deadhead flowers to keep them blooming longer. The bright color of this flower looks wonderful with Larkspur and Daisies. This flower may reseed itself also. Plant seeds in the spring or you can fall plant them in most US States.

Plains Coreopsis is found native in many US States. This flower attracts birds, bees and butterflies with its bright yellow and red colors. It makes a good cut flower. Plains Coreopsis can be started indoors if transplanted when very small or just  outdoors. Once established this flower may need a support. It needs to be planted in well drained soils. In areas with mild winters this flower may be fall planted. All other areas must spring plant this flower. Too much heat and humidity can cause less blooms. This flower needs average watering and do not over water. To promote more blooms deadheading this flower may help. Plains Coreopsis grows in many different kinds of soil.

Cosmos are a native to Mexico. This flower loves full sun. It works great for cut flowers and is a good container plant. The birds like eating the seeds of this flower. Cosmos do not like overly rich soil. If you fertilize them they can get very tall and fall over. These do best if planted and then watered until established. Once established these flowers do not need as much water. This flower loves warm weather and doesn't tolerate cold as well.

Sulphur Cosmos do well in hot, dry climates. They are a native to Central America and can grow in 100F temperatures. This Cosmo has a smaller flower than the Cosmos Bipinnatus that come in Pink, Purple and White colors.  When you plant this flower you can expect it to bloom later in the season. You can plant this flower seed in the fall in warmer climate areas. In cooler areas wait to plant this seed until spring when the ground warms up otherwise this seed will sit in the ground and rot because it needs heat to get this seed growing. Sulphur Cosmos attract birds and make good cut flowers. They grow in dry to moist soil. Avoid planting this flower in overly rich soil and don't fertilize it. Fertilizing causes more plant growth and less blooms. This flower does good with neglect. It can be started indoors but does best if planted directly outside.

Chinese Forget-Me-Nots were introduced from China. They enjoy being in full sun and can grow in warm or cool climates in wet or dry soil.They can be started indoors or outdoors. This flower is a hardy annual and canreseed itself. This forget-me-not is an annual, it can reseed itself but caneasily be controlled unlike the native forget-me-not sometimes. This flower canwork as a cut flower but is very short. It produces small sky blue flowers. This flower can be fall planted in zones 7-10.

This flower is a native to Europe. Rocket Larkspur comes in many colors and makes a great cut and/or dried flower. Bees and Butterflies are attracted to it.  Note: The leaves and seeds of this flower are poisonous so be cautious when planting around children or pets. Rocket Larkspur can be spring or fall planted. If you plant this seed in the spring for better success try putting the seed in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks and then plant them. This flower likes to get cold first before it will grow sometimes. Expect blooms mid to late season. Rocket Larkspur can be started indoors but make sure you transplant when the plants are small.

(Digitalis purpurea) FOXGLOVE

Foxglove is native to Europe.  This flower needs to be planted in soil that is rich in organic matter. Foxglove is highly toxic and may be fatal if eaten. The leaves, flowers and seeds are all poisonous. This flower is considered a herb. Hummingbirds and bumblebees are attracted to this flower. Foxglove can be started indoors and transplanted or just planted directly outdoors from seed.  This flower will tolerate a bit of shade.  Plant in full shade in hot climates and full sun to partial shade in cooler climates. Will not bloom the first year planted. May be spring or fall planted from seed.

(Dimorphotheca sinuata) AFRICAN DAISY

African Daisy comes from South Africa. They do best in full sun. They don't like hot humid weather as much and will have less blooms and more foliage the more humid the weather. At the beach they can tolerate some cool humid areas. They like hot-dry weather similar to what it is where they come from.. This flower is very drought tolerant. It can be started indoors. Deadheading this flower will prolong blooming. Make sure this flower is provide well-drained soil.  The flowers on this flower will close when in a shaded area and close at night. African Daisy can be a good winter annual to plant in zones 10-13 and a good spring/summer annual in zones 8-10. This plant will die at frost. One interesting thing about this flower is the plant produces two different looking seeds- a stick and a flake looking seed that will both produce the same looking plants and different colors this variety comes in. This flower is also called a Cape Marigold.

Purple Coneflower is a drought tolerantperennial native to the Midwest and Southeastern United States. This flowerattracts birds & butterflies and makes a good cut flower. Also known asEchinacea this flower is also known as a herb. Plant the seeds in well-drainedsoil in a full sun or partial shady area. 

Plant this flower outdoors in the spring or start indoors 4-6 weeks beforethe last frost in cooler climates. In warmer climates in the Southern US fallplant this flower. Because this flower is a perennial it also may be fallplanted in other parts of the US.

Oregon Sunshine is also called Golden Yarrow and Wooly Eriophyllum. This flower has yellow flowers and usually found in uplands commonly  in sandy or well drained gravel soil. Oregon Sunshine is also found in dry open habitats at low to mid elevations. This flower may become leggy and needs to be cut back every once in a while. Found growing from Southern B.C. to east of the Cascades to the Sierra Nevadas over to Western Montana, South eastern Idaho, northeastern Nevada and Southern California. Blooms can occur anytime in May to August. This flower is low growing, drought tolerant and a long lasting perennial. *In the Northwest Fall plant for best results directly outside .. most Oregon natives need the cold weather to get them growing good. This flower is a native to California. It prefers full sun and can grow given little water. This flower does better if planted outdoors because they don't like to be transplanted. California Poppies are frost sensitive. They need well-drained soils to grow in. This flower can be fall planted in zones 7-10. There are several varieties of California Poppies. There is a Perennial and Annual native California Poppy that are Orange in color. There are also multicolored varieties that come in single and double petals such as the 'Mission Bell Mix' pictured on the right.

Blankeflower is a native to a lot of US States. This flower is an excellent cut flower and is easily grown from seed. Being a perennial this flower may not bloom the first year but once established is an excellent garden flower. Blankeflower is very drought resistant and enjoys well drained sandy soil. Plant this flower in full sun and keep out of heavy clay soil. This flower is a member of the sunflower family and may attract birds and bees. Blankeflower may be started indoors but does best if started outdoors.

Globe Gilia is a native to the Pacific Coast.  This flower can be planted in full sun or a light shaded area.  This gilia is drought tolerant and grows in many soil types.  Globe Gilia is also called Blue Thimble Flower.

Birds Eyes enjoys full sun to partial shade. This flower enjoys well-drained average to light soil and will tolerate some sandy soil. This seed is best propagated by sowing outdoors in cool climates. Birds Eyes can adapt to many different conditions and is a more cold tolerant flower. It does not do well when transplanted because it has too weak of a stem.  There are over 100 species of Gilia. Birds Eyes can be fall planted in zones 7-10.

Blue Gilia is a native to California.  This flower is also called Gabriels Trumpet. Plant this flower in full sun to a partial shady area.

Baby's Breath is related to the carnation. They work excellent as a cut flower but this variety does not work as well for a dried flower. This flower is easy to grow and will be one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. This flower is a native to the Ukraine. Annual Babys Breath has larger blooms then the perennial types of Babys Breath. This flower enjoys well drained soil and full or partial sun. This flower has a short bloom season so plant seeds every couple of weeks for continued blooms. Babys Breath can grow in full sun to partial shade and can be started indoors but will do better if planted directly outdoors. This flower can grow in many types of soil and may do better if crowded. This flower also comes in Red and Pink.

Sunspot Sunflower is short growing at 2-3 ft. tall with 10" diameter blooms. This sunflower is drought tolerant and loves the sun. If you want to attract birds to your garden then this flower is a good source of feed for birds. Sunflowers are also a good cut flower. Plant this flower in the spring after all danger of frost is past. There are other varieties of sunflowers also produced in Oregon. Some other ones that are 5-7ft. tall include 'Lemon Queen' & 'Autumn Beauty Mix'.

Dames Rocket enjoys a moist, well drained soil. This flower resembles phlox but belongs to the mustard family and native to Europe. It has a nice sweet fragrance which is stronger smelling at night or in the evening. It likes heavy fertilizer and moist, well-drained soil. Dames Rocket likes to be planted in full sun or partial shade. This flower can be fall planted and if it is fall planted will bloom early in the spring.  This flower blooms more the second spring. Let this flower reseed itself as it can be a shorter lived perennial.

Candy Tuft enjoys cooler climates. It is a hardy annual. This flower is a native to Europe where it is found growing wild in grain fields. Often found growing in limey soil throughout the Mediterranean area to Western and Central Europe. This flower likes chalky, not to rich well-drained soil. Candy Tuft grows in mounds and work as a great border or as filler in pots. This makes a good cut flower and attracts birds, bees and butterlfies.In cooler temperature areas plant this flower in the spring or fall (zones 7-10) for best success in full sun. In warmer climate areas plant this flower in a somewhat shadier to full sun in the Fall.  This flower can be started indoors but plant in the ground before blooming starts for best results. Comes in Tall and Dwarf sizes.

Oregon Iris is found west of the Cascade Mountains from Southern Washington and into Oregon. This flower was used by the Native American Indians for its leaves making fishing nets with them. Plant the seed for this flower in a full sun to partial shady area. This iris has many names such as Oregon Iris, Purple or Blue Flag and Wild Iris. In the wild this iris is found growing in open grassy meadows, along roadsides, in pastures, in logged areas and at low to mid elevations. Oak Woodlands and Coniferous forests are also common places to site and Oregon Iris growing in the wild. Color of this flower can range from darker purple to a light lavendar to an occasional white. Oregon Iris does not transplant well. This flower forms clumps and blooms midspring. Oregon Iris may take a couple years from seed until it will bloom. *In the Northwest Fall plant for best results directly outside .. most Oregon natives need the cold weather to get them growing good (*Be patient with natives...some can take longer to get out of the ground and grow and may take 2-3 yrs to establish)

Sweet Alyssum is a native to Southern Europe. It works great for borders or fillers in a pot or in the yard. It is drought tolerant and enjoys full sun to partial shade. This flower is also called Sweet Alice. This flower is easy to grow from seed and can be started indoors and then transplanted. It has a slight fragrance to it. Once the blooming of this flower seems to be slowing down trim back the flowers or take a hedge trimmer or something and cut them back a bit. This will help promote more growth and blooms. Sweet Alyssum can get 3-10" tall. It has a low drought tolerance. This flower does well in  fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Bees and Butterflies are attracted to Alyssum. Love-In-A-Mist is part of the Ranunculaceae family which then makes it also related to  Anenomes, Clematis, Aquilegia and Buttercup.Love-In-A-Mist need to be planted somewhere where there is at least 6 hours of sunlight. Plant seed on top of well drained soil in the spring (or they can be planted in the fall in milder winter areas). This flower does not handle transplanting very well. Red poppies are a native to Europe and have been around a long time. They are famous for appearing on Flanders Field after a battle during WWII and are then therefore often called 'Flanders Poppy'. This flower is also in many countries used as a symbol of remembering and many countries use this flower when remembering WWII by wearing them.  Poppies work as cut flowers but the ends need to be boiled in water or burned with a match for the flowers to hold up any amount of time without wilting.  The Shirley Poppy was developed from the Red Poppy. Shirley Poppy comes in shades of Pink, Red and White and also in double and single petals. This flower can be spring or fall planted in the United States.   They like to be planted in an area with full sun. Gloriosa Daisy is not a native to the United States.  The cultivar that this flower was made of is a native - the Black Eyed Susan.  Gloriosa Daisy was developed in the 1950's by Burpee Seed Company.  This flower is easy to grow and has larger flowers and more color to it than the Black Eyed Susan.  Gloriosa Daisy is great for a cut flower and can attract birds, bees and butterflies.  Plant this flower in an area with lots of sun.  This flower can be very drought tolerant-it loves heat.
