Alyssum is a flower that is native to southern Europe. It works well for borders or pot fillers and will thrive in most yards. It is drought tolerant and needs full sun with only partial shade. It is easy to grow from seed and can be started indoors and transplanted. This flower releases a unique fragrance that will carry through the blossoms. Once the blooming has slowed down, trim back the flowers with a hedge trimmer or a pair of small clippers to help promote more growth and continued blooms. Alyssum will grow anywhere between 3 and 6 inches tall. It has a low drought tolerance and needs a wealthy supply of water. It flourishes when planted in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. In cooler climates Alyssum should be planted outside in the spring, although it may be planted indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. In the warmer climates of the southern United States this flower should be fall planted. There are many different varieties of Alyssum. Alyssum ‘Carpet of Snow’ is a shorter, white variety of this flower.
